A little scary and very painful

So last night about 11:00 pm just as we are going to sleep, believe it or not, I started having chest pains. They seems to be from the middle of my sternum left over the bottom and middle of my entire pectoral, as well as  pains in about the same place on my back, on the inside of my shoulder blade. And boy did it hurt. When it started it felt like a pulled very sore muscle, but then it continued to get worse. To the point where I was short of breath and even siting up really didn't help. The pain literally felt like someone had run a knife right through my pectoral. So being a man, I, of course, just tried to suck it up. It would go away eventually. Well after about 20 minutes, the pain was still there, just as painful as ever. So at about 11:25 pm, I decided to get Myrica out of bed and make her drive me to the hospital. I figured, "You know what, chest pains at any age are never good and its lasted a long time, so I think the responsible thing to do would be to go and get it checked out. Thats why we pay medical, isn't it?

So we get to the hospital and the pain is still there and let me tell you, when you mention chest pain at a hospital, you get service. That and it being Smithers, and there was only one other family and they were waiting for a doctor to come in. So I was seen right away, they questioned me throughly took my blood pressure, and then they did an EKG (Electrocardiogram: An electrocardiogram is a test that checks for problems with the electrical activity of your heart. An EKG translates the heart's electrical activity into line tracings on paper. The spikes and dips in the line tracings are called waves.) And after everything is said and done, I'm not having a heart attack. All the above was done by the nurse, and after the EKG the doctor came in to look at me. After a little bit of the cold stethoscope over my chest and back, he came to the determination that the chest pain is being cause by pinched nerves in my rib cage. Apparently when you do something strenuous, if the muscles turn the wrong way, or are tweaked, they stiffen up. Think of it like a leg cramp in between all the ribs on the left side and each of those ribs pinching a nerve. Not fun.

So he told me to take some ibuprofen and it should release the tension. So I took some ibuprofen and it slowly started to go away. Even this morning, I can still feel it. Not the shooting pain it was, but definitely tender.

And that was our adventure last night. I'm still alive and kicking, I'm just not allowed to kick to hard in case I over do it again. :P

Cheers.

not nice at all! By The Janester on Jan 23 2010 at 8:50 AM
That's kinda scary! I'm glad you're okay! Have you done any back stretches? They may help (it's possible). I'm glad the ibuprofen eased up the pain. I can't say I've had something similar, but I've had chest pains due to my back and/or ribs being out (and they've sometimes been very painful). But they never kept getting worse. Yikes to you! Do you know what you did that cause it to be that way?
Not sure By Adam on Jan 23 2010 at 9:10 AM
There could have been a number of things that triggered it. They said it usually happens with laborers because of the physical labor they do, but in this case, it was probably cause by a whole bunch of small things. It was a crazy day yesterday. We came home and the house smelled disgusting, and we found out that it was coming from Grady, so we gave him a bath. That could have been a major trigger. Or playing with Ore, or even tweaking my arm in a bad position while trying to go to sleep, and it just pushing my muscles over the edge.
Glad you're ok. By Andy Korvemaker on Jan 24 2010 at 2:58 PM
and "the house smelled disgusting, and we found out that it was coming from Grady" made both of us laugh out loud pretty good. We still snicker at it.
