Well here is the big news that I hinted at in my last post. We bought a house. Not a mobile home. Not a condo. A actual house with detached garage, and .41 acres of land. All ours. We signed the final acceptance offer this past week and took off all of our conditions. Looks like its going to be a great house. We can't wait to move in.

I have posted some pictures under the pictures section of the left, but if you would like to know where it is and all that jazz, contact me with the contact form and I'll send you the hidden link. This has a map that shows you exactly where the house is and all that.

In other news, Just want to make everyone aware of what has happened this morning in Chile. A 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit about 350 miles south of Santiago. Apparently it sent out a tsunami. If you haven't heard, a confirmed report says that a 40 meter (120 foot) tsunami hit the Juan Fernandez islands.

Just for some background info, an increase of 1 step on this logarithmic scale (moment magnitude scale used for measuring earthquakes) corresponds to a 101.5 ≈ 31.6 times increase in the amount of energy released, and an increase of 2 steps corresponds to a 103 ≈ 1000 times increase in energy. So Haiti was a 7.0, Chile was an 8.8. this corresponds to about 1.8 increase in power of the earthquake compared to that of Haiti. The other thing to think of is that most tsunamis need a magnitude of 7.5 or higher to actually form. The type of earthquake in Chile was a megathrust earthquake (megathrust earthquake link. These type of earthquakes are so destructive that all 9.0+ magnitude earthquakes since 1900 have been caused by this type of earthquake. In fact, no other type of known tectonic activity can produce earthquakes of this scale. This is compared to the Haiti earthquake which was a conservative (AKA transforming) earthquake, were tow tectonic plates move past each other causing friction, on of them gives rapid shaking is caused making an earth quake. The Haiti earthquake was one of the largest conservative earthquake.

Hope you found this a little interesting.

Wow, that's crazyness about the earthquake. I can only imagine what the damage is for that kind of quake...and the tsunami is still to come...I wonder where it will hit?
